The S in PESTLE stands for social influences.
Social influences are the cultural and demographic Statistical data about a population of people. aspects of an environment. Demographics refer to characteristics within a population such as:
- language and culture
- religion
- educational attainment (eg no qualifications, educated to GCSE or A level, educated to degree level)
- income level
- occupation
- family structure (eg single parent family One parent and children., nuclear family Two parents and children., extended family Any household which includes family members other than just parents and their children, such as cousins, grandparents or other relatives.)
Businesses are interested in the people that live nearby as they are more likely to be their customers.
Real-life example
A supermarket may extend its product range to meet the needs of a local community.
For example, if a community has a thriving Chinese or Polish community, a supermarket may stock products such as lotus root (a popular vegetable used in Chinese cooking) or sauerkraut (a popular Polish pickled cabbage dish).
Alternatively, if the income level of a location is high, there may be more local retailers that sell items that are priced at a premium priceA price set higher than competitors to suggest higher quality. such as art galleries or exclusive restaurants.
