Vector components

Any vector can be resolved into two components at right angles to each other.

These two components when added together have the same effect as the initial single vector.

A vector F at an angle of theta to its horizonal component.

Horizontal and vertical components of a vector

is the same as:

Horizontal (Fx) and vertical (Fy) components of a vector, which are at an angle of theta to horizonal

Expressed mathematically:

\({F_x} = F\cos (\theta )\)

and:

\({F_y} = F\sin (\theta )\)

Question

A force of 30N at an angle of 40 degrees to horizontal line coming from the square object

A of 30 N acts on a box as shown.

Find the horizontal and vertical components of the 30 N force. Round the answers to one decimal place.
