Maintaining internal environments - OCR GatewayHomeostasis

Homeostasis is the regulation of conditions in the body such as temperature, water content and carbon dioxide levels. Diabetes is a condition where the body cannot regulate its blood glucose levels.

Homeostasis

Greg Foot explains the role of the hormone ADH on the permeability of the kidney tubules - regulating the water levels in the body

maintains optimal conditions for action throughout the body, as well as all cell functions.

In the human body, these include the control of:

  • blood concentration
  • body temperature
  • water levels

These automatic control systems may involve nervous responses () or chemical responses ().

Nervous system

The human nervous system consists of:

  • the (CNS) 鈥 the brain and spinal cord
  • the 鈥 nerve cells that carry information to or from the CNS
