In 1687, Isaac Newton created three laws of motion to describe the relationship between a body and the forces acting upon it, and how the body moves in response to those forces.
In a theme park, one of the rides has a motor that can deliver a forward force to an empty passenger car.
A force of frictionA force that opposes or prevents movement. When work is done against friction, kinetic energy is converted into heat energy. of 400 N acts on the car which has a mass of 500 kg and it accelerates at a rate of 2.0 m/s2.
Calculate the forward force delivered by the motor.
F = ma
Resultant force = F - 400 N
a = 2.0 m/s2.
m = 500 kg
F - 400 N = 500 kg x 2.0 m/s2
F = 1000 N + 400 N
F = 1400 N
The forward force delivered by the motor is 1400 N.
