The 1960s saw the formation of many rock bands. The style which dominated the previous decade had evolved into a more guitar-dominated genre known as rock. Many of these bands developed new subgenres of rock and carried on producing music in the 1970s.

Rock 鈥檔鈥 roll influences can be heard in early songs by The Beatles, such as She Loves You and I Saw Her Standing There. Their style altered over the years and became more experimental. Sgt. Pepper鈥檚 Lonely Hearts Club Band was recorded during the band鈥檚 studio years and features unusual electronic instruments, guitar , traditional Indian-originating instruments, a 40-piece orchestra plus a French horn quartet. The genre can be classed as due to its strange lyrics and surreal sounds.

This particular song is unique as it was written and performed by George Harrison, and the other members of the band were not involved. George Harrison sang lead and played the guitar, and . As well as the sitar, the song features other Indian instruments such as the swarmandal, dilruba and .

The song has spiritual lyrics and conveys a message about how life carries on within you and without you.
