The conditional tense - when to use it

The is used to describe what someone would do or what would happen in the future. It can also be used to express ambitions and intentions. For example:

  • Mi colegio ideal tendr铆a una piscina (My ideal school would have a swimming pool).
  • 驴Que har铆as? (What would you do?)
  • Con m谩s tiempo yo terminar铆a mis deberes (With more time, I would finish my homework).

The most common in the conditional tense is me gustar铆a (I would like). This can be used to say what you would like to do in the future, eg me gustar铆a vivir en Nueva York (I would like to live in New York) or it can also be used for polite requests, eg me gustar铆a hablar con el jefe (I would like to speak to the boss).

Could and should

The verb poder (to be able) can be used in the conditional to make the polite request or statement 'Could...?' For example, 驴Podr铆as prestarme un bol铆grafo? (Could you lend me a pen?), la visita podr铆a ser interesante (the visit could be interesting).

The conditional of the verb deber is used to mean should, eg deber铆a beber m谩s agua (I should drink more water), los profesores deber铆an ser menos estrictos (the teachers should be less strict).

The conditional is often used to say what would happen if something else occurred. This is formed using si (if) and the imperfect subjunctive. This is a complex structure, but it can be useful to learn a few set phrases containing it, eg:

  • Si tuviera mucho dinero, ir铆a de vacaciones (If I had a lot of money, I would go on holiday).
  • Si fuera rico, comprar铆a un coche r谩pido (If I were rich, I would buy a fast car).

The imperfect of hay (there is/there are) is 丑补产铆补 (there was/there were/there used to be). 贬补产铆补 is useful for describing things in the past, eg: en mi pueblo 丑补产铆补 un restaurante (in my village, there used to be a restaurant).
