Performing and composing ideas
Some of the techniques found in Migra can be transferred to other performances and in composing. Understanding the effects of each may develop musicianship skills. The techniques used are shown in the table below.
In performance | In composing | |
Protest music | Make sure the words are clear and sung with meaning. Performers of protest songs need to get the message across to the listener. | Choose a current affairs topic that inspires writing, for example immigration, war, racism, bullying and human rights. |
Ornamentation | Use ornamentation to decorate the melody, which is especially useful in a solo. | Use ornamentation to show variation in a repeating section. |
Rock instrumentation | Ensure the performance is balanced by adjusting the dynamics on the electric instruments and amps. | Compose a piece using a rock band line-up - vocals, electric guitar, bass guitar and drums. |
Fusion | Taking time to understand the elements of the genres in the ensemble can help the performance sound authentic. | Try combining two different styles of music, eg to create a piece of fusion. |
Son clave | Although a son clave is short repeated phrase it needs to maintain its consistency in dynamic and rhythm. | Include a son clave rhythm to any instrument in your composition to create a Latin feel. |
Structure | Ensure that the leading instrument or voice can be heard when a new section begins by adjusting the dynamics and balance. | Compose a piece that uses instrumental interludes to create variety and contrast, including a solo section for a performer to improvise over. |
