The life of Jesus

The Last Supper
The Last Supper refers to the final meal Jesus shared with his discipleA person who follows and learns from someone else., the night before his crucifixionRoman method of execution by nailing someone to a cross, often until they die of asphyxiation; used on Jesus and many others.. Jesus gave bread and wine to his disciples, telling them: do this in remembrance of me (Luke 22:19).

Jesus' arrest and trial
Jesus took some of his disciples to the Garden of GethsemaneThe garden close to the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem where Jesus spent the night before his capture and crucifixion.. Judas, another of 闯别蝉耻蝉鈥 disciples, then arrived, leading the chief priests and their guards to Jesus. The chief priests wanted to arrest Jesus as they believed he was working against the Jewish authorities. 闯别蝉耻蝉鈥 disciples tried to defend him, but Jesus instructed them to put their swords away. Jesus was led away to the house of the High Priest.
Jesus was put on trial by the SanhedrinThe Jewish supreme court and legislative body during the Roman period. Also the name given to a section of the Talmud. which found him guilty of blasphemySpeaking about God in a sacrilegious way.. The next morning, Jesus was taken to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor. Pilate could not find Jesus guilty, and offered to release either Jesus or a Jewish freedom fighter, Barabbas. The crowd chose Barabbas to be released. This meant Jesus was to be crucified. The soldiers mocked Jesus, and a crown of thorns was placed on his head.
The crucifixion
Jesus was crucified on a Friday, with a robber on each side of him.
Catholics believe that 闯别蝉耻蝉鈥 crucifixion is a crucial moment in the life of Jesus as it was this act that brought humans salvationThe healing of a broken relationship between people and God. from sin.
The resurrection
闯别蝉耻蝉鈥 body was buried in a tomb guarded by Roman soldiers. Early on the Sunday morning following 闯别蝉耻蝉鈥 crucifixion, some of his female followers went to anointTo rub water or oil on a person as a ceremony of blessing. Typically an honour reserved for royalty. his body with spices. However, the tomb was empty. Two men in gleaming white clothes appeared at the tomb and told the women that Jesus had risen. The women then informed the disciples of the empty tomb.
The resurrectionThe Christian belief that Jesus rose from the dead on the third day after the crucifixion. The rising from the dead of believers on the Last Day in a new, or risen, life. of Jesus is very significant, as Christians believe it shows that death is not the end.
The ascension
The Gospel of Luke states that 40 days after 闯别蝉耻蝉鈥 resurrection, he told his disciples that they must stay in Jerusalem and that they would receive the power of the Holy Spirit. Then, Jesus was taken up into a cloud and was carried to HeavenA physical place, or a state of mind, associated with God and the afterlife.. Two men in white appeared and told the disciples Jesus had gone to Heaven.
The ascensionFor Christians, when Jesus went up to Heaven 40 days after he rose from the dead. reminds Catholics that Jesus has gone to Heaven to prepare a place for them, so they do not need to fear death. As Jesus is no longer restricted by time or space, he is always with them.
