Compatability of two parts
A designer specifies the measurements of two parts (\(A\) and \(B\)) of a mobile phone that have to be connected.
The connection section of Part A is designed to be \(13mm\) wide. The connection section of Part B is designed to be \(12.5mm\) and fit into Part A.
The manufacturing process of Part A can guarantee the connection section to be 13 卤 0.2mm.
The manufacturing process of Part B however can only guarantee the connection section to be 12.5 卤 0.4mm.
This presents an issue of compatibility.
The range of possible width of the Part A connection is from \(13.2mm\) down to \(12.8mm\).
The range of possible width of the Part B connection is from \(12.9mm\) down to \(12.1mm\).
There is the possibility that Part B will be the same size or even larger than Part A at the connection point and will not be able to fit inside.
So this is not a design that will work in practice as the assembly will sometimes fail.
There would have to be a new design model to cope with the manufacturing process.
Question
The design instructions for the width of two connecting parts is as follows:
- Part G \(45.6mm\)
- Part H \(44.7mm\)
Part H is to fit into Part G
The manufacturing process for Part G can guarantee a width of \(45.6 + 0.4mm\).
The manufacturing process for Part H can guarantee a width of \(44.8 + 0.3mm\).
Comment on the compatibility of these parts given this information.
The range of possible width of Part G is from \(46.0mm\) down to \(45.2mm\).
The range of possible width of Part H is from \(45.1mm\) down to \(44.5mm\).
Part H will always be produced smaller than Part G as required.
Based on this information the two parts will be compatible.
Question
The design instructions for the width of two connecting parts is as follows:
- Part S \(37.6mm\)
- Part T \(37.2mm\)
Part T is to fit into Part S
The manufacturing process for Part S can guarantee a width of \(37.6 卤 0.3mm\).
The manufacturing process for Part T can guarantee a width of \(37.2 卤 0.2mm\).
Comment on the compatibility of these parts given this information.
The range of possible width of Part S is from \(37.9mm\) down to \(37.3mm\).
The range of possible width of Part T is from \(37.4mm\) down to \(37.0mm\).
There is the possibility that Part T will be the same size or even larger than Part S and will not be able to fit inside.
The two parts may not be compatible.
