The Cold War - exam preparation - EdexcelWrite a narrative account analysing… (8 marks)

In your History GCSE, it is important that you not only have good subject knowledge, but have the skills to apply this knowledge to exam questions.

Part of HistoryThe Cold War and Vietnam

Write a narrative account analysing the key events of… (8 marks)

This type of question will assess your knowledge of the period. You will be given stimulus points to prompt you in the right direction. You need to make sure you place events in the correct order, explain why things happened and also what they led to. This will include the key concepts of ‘cause and consequence’.

Example:

Write a narrative account analysing the key events of the Cuban Missile Crisis, 1962.

You may use the following in your answer:

  • the Bay of Pigs incident
  • the 13 days of the crisis

You must also use information of your own.

Tips:

Briefly pause and plan which events you will talk about and the order they should they go. Remember, you need to give a full account of what happened but it shouldn’t just be a description. Use phrases like ‘this meant that’, ‘this led to’, ‘this caused’, ‘as a result of this’ and ‘consequently’ to help you analyse the links between the different parts of your narrative clearly.

Don’t forget to go beyond the stimulus material provided, if you don’t you will limit the marks you can be given.
