The rising demand for energy

World population is still increasing. The world population in 2022 of 8 billion is projected to increase and reach 9.8 billion by 2050, according to a UN report.

The International Energy Agency鈥檚 2007 World Energy Outlook states that between now and 2030:

Global energy needs are expected to grow, with fossil fuels remaining the dominant source.

Between 2005 and 2030, energy needs are projected to expand by 55 per cent, with demand increasing from 11.4 billion tons of oil equivalent to 17.7 billion.

Between 2005 and 2030, energy consumption is expected to increase by 50 per cent, with the bulk of the demand coming from developing countries.

Oil, coal and gas together account for the majority of global primary energy consumption.

In the UK in 2015, renewable energy provisionally accounted for 8.3 per cent of final energy consumption. Between 2014 and 2015 electricity generation from renewable sources increased by 29 per cent.
