The problem

Global poverty is a global problem. Around 1 billion people live on less than 84p a day. Many African countries do not have the resources which would enable them to find a way to beat poverty.

The headline from a ����ý article in 2015 asked:

Is it possible to end global poverty?

The article states that although the number of people living in extreme poverty has halved in 20 years, it will be difficult to achieve the United Nation’s aim of beating world poverty by 2030 as we need to find ways of raising incomes and increasing productivity.

In other words, helping people to help themselves.

The NGO

Oxfam was set up over 70 years ago in an effort to help deal with global poverty. One of their beliefs is that people have the power to change their lives and the lives of those around them — all they need is a little help.

Action: Ethiopia, Growing Better

����ڲ���’s Growing Better project in Ethiopia helps thousands of small-scale women farmers by providing agricultural training, better quality seeds, irrigation, business training and the chance to work together to improve their yields.

This is an example of how NGOs set up their own schemes to help people improve their lives through education, training and access to opportunities.
