Techniques and approaches

Here is a brief description of some of the standard techniques DJs use in their work. For those who have access to decks, try out some of the following techniques:

Scratching

Two decks are required. Have one deck playing a track whilst scratching rhythmic patterns on the other deck.

Flare

A type of scratch used by turntablists. It is made from a combination of moving the record on the turntable by hand and quick movement of the cross fader. The flare was invented by its namesake, DJ Flare.

Beat juggling

Involves working with two drum patterns on the two decks. The drum patterns can be identical or different. New patterns are created using the mixer. For example, using two copies of the same drum pattern to develop a pattern by doubling part of the kit, syncopating sections to add an element of variety to the original rhythm part.
