Evolution in Hinduism and Islam
Is the theory of evolution compatible with Hinduism?
Some Hindus do not agree with the theory of evolution for the following reasons:
- Lord Vishnu will have a role in evolution, rather than it being left to chance.
- The existence and importance of the atman (soul) is not addressed 鈥 without the atman there is no life.
- It contradicts Hindu creation stories, if they are taken literally.
However, many Hindus have no issue with evolution theory for the following reasons:
- Brahman (the creator) generates life on Earth and Vishnu preserves it. Evolution is one of many ways this happens.
- Vishnu (the preserver of the universe) is evident in evolution just by the fact that life continues and is strengthened.
Hindus and science
Hindus believe in karma or 鈥榠ntentional action鈥. Many Hindus believe that using 鈥榞od-given鈥 talents to improve or save life is a positive action. Some would say that following a career in medicine or scientific research is the dharma (or duty) of those who have the ability to do so.
Hindus who are scientists do not find it difficult to balance their faith and their work. They believe that scientific principles, such as testing and analysis, are not at odds with Hindu principles, such as respect for life and always aiming to do good.
Is the theory of evolution compatible with Islam?
Some Muslims have difficulty with the idea that the human species is subject to the same laws of natural selection as all other species. The 蚕耻谤鈥檃苍The sacred book in Islam, it is believed that it contains the word of God, dictated by Angel Jibril and written in Arabic. teaches that humans have a special, supervisory role in creation.
Other Muslims view evolution as simply Allah鈥檚 way of creating life. They believe that Allah created the environment, which drives evolution and oversees the natural processes whereby species evolve.
