Exam and Assignment
There are three parts to the Higher Geography assessment: a two-part question paper (worth 73% of total marks) and also an assignment worth 30 marks (27% of total available marks). The write-up time for the assignment is 1 hour 30 minutes.
The question paper is comprised of:
- Paper one: 100 marks in total. Exam time 鈥 1 hour 50 minutes
- Paper two: 60 marks in total. Exam time 鈥 1 hour 10 minutes
Paper One structure
Paper One is made-up of two sections:
- Section 1: Physical Environments 鈥 worth 50 marks
- Section 2: Human Environments 鈥 worth 50 marks
Paper One structure
Section 1: the Physical Environments 鈥 this will include areas of the syllabus from the Atmosphere, Biosphere, Hydrosphere and Lithosphere topics.
Section 2: the Human Environments 鈥 this will consist of a range of questions from the Population, Rural and Urban topics.
Each section contains a variety of extended response questions. You should attempt to answer all questions in each section in Paper One.
Paper Two structure
Paper Two is made-up of two sections:
- Section 1: Global Issues 鈥 worth 40 marks
- Section 2: Application of Geographical Skills 鈥 worth 20 marks
In section 1 you will answer two questions from a choice of four:
- Development and Health
- Energy
- Global Climate Change
- River Basin Management
Each question is worth 20 marks, but these are usually split into sub-questions.
In section 2 the Application of Geographical Skills is a mandatory question, which consists of an extended response question. The skills required for answering this section include mapping skills as well as the interpretation and use of numerical and graphical information. This question is worth a total of 20 marks.
Both question papers have a variety of questions testing both knowledge and understanding, and geographical skills.
