The impact of the Volume 2: Release album helped Afro Celt Sound System continue to grow their presence and popularity. The original project was only a collaboration and was intended to be temporary.

The band was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best World Music in 2000 and released their third album, Volume 3: Further in Time, the following year. It reached No. 1 in the American Billboard Top World Music Album Chart.

Furthermore, the track Dark Moon was used in the 2002 film Gangs of New York. The songs Mama Ararira and The Road to Exile feature in the 2004 film Hotel Rwanda.
