The USA claims that China unfairly blocks US exports and is keeping the value of the Chinese currency (the yuan) artificially low. This helps boost China's exports but makes imports to China more expensive. China, denies these claims.

There have also been disagreements between China and the US over 'Chinese state-sponsored cyber-espionage' (the stealing of intellectual property rights for commercial gain). At a meeting in September 2015 between Presidents Xi and Obama in Washington, talks in relation to 'cyber-espionage' highlighted sharp divisions between the leaders of the two countries.

The disagreement carried on during President Trump's term. I 2020, President Trump imposed tariffs on goods from China that added up to more than $360 billion (拢268 billion).

China retaliated by imposing tariffs on American products worth over $110 billion. (Source: 大象传媒 News)

China has also been in trade disputes over tariffs or bans on imports of products including Australian wine, Japanese steel and Lithuanian beef and dairy products.

A number of government's have expressed security concerns over use of Chinese apps including TikTok. Although TikTok is run by a private Chinese company, Bytedance, the governments of the USA, UK, Canada ans some EU countries have raised concern that the company could share user's data with the Chinese government. Several countries have banned TikTok from any device used for government work, or in some cases any device belonging to government employees.
