Several techniques can be used when dividing by a single digit whole number. Two commonly used methods are:
Divide \(1920\) by \(8\) - \((1920 \div 8)\)
\(2 \times 2 \times 2 = 8\). Therefore to divide \(1920\) by \(8\) we can divide by \(2\) in each of three steps:
\(1920 \div 2 = 960\)
\(960 \div 2 = 480\)
\(480 \div 2 = 240\)
Therefore \(1920 \div 8 = 240\)
Now try the example question below.
Divide \(348\) by \(6\) - \((348 \div 6)\)
\(2 \times 3 = 6\) therefore to divide \(348\) by \(6\) we can divide by \(2\) and also by \(3\):
\(348 \div 2 = 174\)
\(174 \div 3 = 58\)
Therefore \(348 \div 6 = 58\)
