Use of juxtaposition

In many TV programmes, the of two different national or regional identities can be used for comedic or dramatic effect.

In the TV series Doc Martin, the main character, Martin Ellingham, moves to a Cornish village from London. His accent, dress and contrast completely with the local community and lead to many awkward and amusing situations.

In Gavin and Stacey the two central families have very distinct regional identities, this is shown through their accents, attitudes and experiences. The contrast leads to many comedy moments centred on their differences.

Stereotypical representations might not always be negative but they do not give a true image of what a particular nation or region is like. This can greatly influence a person's understanding of an area if it is the only representation they have seen.
