Sample question 1 - Foundation and Higher
Question
As fuel moves through a pipe, it becomes positively charged.
Explain how the worker can prevent a build-up of charge when pumping fuel into the aircraft. [3 marks]
They can use a conductor to connect the aircraft and the ground - this allows negative charge to move onto the aircraft which neutralises the positive charge.
Sample question 2 - Higher
Question
When spray-painting a car door, the electrostatic method is used. A car door has a negative charge, and the droplets of paint receive a positive charge as they leave the spray gun.
Explain how charging the door helps the paint to form an even coating on both sides of the door.
You should use ideas of forces and fields in your answer. [3 marks]
The door attracts the paint droplets as they have opposite charges. The paint follows the lines of force and coats both sides of the car door.
