Simplifying algebraic fractionsCancelling down algebraic fractions

Like other fractions, algebraic fractions can be simplified by cancelled down by dividing the numerator and the denominator by a common factor.

Part of MathsAlgebraic skills

Cancelling down algebraic fractions

Simplifying algebraic fractions is a similar process to simplifying other fractions.

Question

Write this fraction in its simplest form: \(\frac{{{a^2}b}}{{a{b^2}}}\)

Example

Write this fraction in its simplest form: \(\frac{{(x + 2)}}{{(x + 5)(x + 2)}}\)

Answer

You should notice the common factor of \(x + 2\) on the numerator and denominator of this fraction, therefore these can be 'cancelled' off. (Remember dividing a number by itself gives 1.)

\(\frac{{(x + 2)}}{{(x + 5)(x + 2)}} = \frac{1}{{(x + 5)}}\)

Now try these examples yourself.

Question

Simplify \(\frac{{{{(2t - 1)}^5}}}{{{{(2t - 1)}^3}}}\)

Question

Simplify \(\frac{{{x^2} + 4x}}{{{x^2} - 16}}\)
