Using images

Images can be used to aid understanding and improve the presentation style of a document. Images can mean:

  • original pictures created using painting applications
  • line drawings using packages
  • photographs taken with a digital camera and imported directly into the document
  • clip art libraries
  • copyright free images available online

Copyright

However, photographs, illustrations and other images that you have not created yourself will generally be protected by copyright as artistic works. This means that you will usually need the permission of the copyright owner(s) if you want to use them in your document.

Selecting effective images

Images need to stand out to grab the reader's attention. Some images can be boring or overused, so it is important to select an image that is visually interesting.

When selecting an image to include in your work, you should consider:

  • the relevance of the image
  • the uniqueness of the image

Here is a checklist of what to think about when selecting effective images.

  • Is the image of high quality? If it is blurry, it should not be used.
  • How big is the image? If it is very small, then people may not notice it or bother to look at it in any detail.
  • How many images have you used? Too many images can make information difficult to read.
  • How have the images been arranged? Make sure the images don鈥檛 break up the flow of text.
  • How obvious are the images? Avoid using clip art and try to select images that are unusual or unexpected.
Really bad: Blurry, poor layout, excessive images, overused images, low relevance. Bad: Less unique, less relevant. Good: Interesting, relevant. Really good: Unusual, unique, unexpected, relevant.
