Inequality in America
The United States is a capitalist countryA capitalist country is where most businesses are controlled by individuals and not the government. In capitalist countries owner of businesses can make a profit and become wealthy. which allows for rich and poor.
Many Americans believe in the American Dream鈥 an idea that any citizen should have the opportunity to achieve a successful life, no matter what their circumstances. The opportunity to become rich is widely seen as part of the American Dream and there are thousands of people who have become very wealthy through business, media and sport.
Compared to other developed countries, the USA is a very unequal society. According to The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development data, the Gini coefficient (which gives a measure of income inequality or unequalness within a country) for the USA was 0.375 in 2021. Compared to many other similar developed countries, such as the UK (0.355), France (0.292) and Canada (0.28), this was higher.
How can we measure social and economic inequality?
Economic inequality can be measured in terms of income, poverty levels and employment/ unemployment levels.
Social inequality can be measured in terms of crime, housing (ownership, value), health (life expectancy, mortality rates, etc.) and educational attainment.
One way to look at inequality in the US is by comparing different racial groups. For example, Whites, Hispanics, Blacks and Asians.
