NARRATOR: Ah yes, on Earth, that鈥檚 called a squirt gun, it shoots water.
It looks like you鈥檒l have to change your credits into Earth money if you want to buy anything from this stall.
On Earth, money comes in pounds and pence, and every pound is worth 100p.
That there is a ten pound note, which is worth ten one pound coins.
But will it be enough to buy the things you want?
Alien: Er鈥︹
NARRATOR: Let鈥檚 see, the puppy costs 拢3.50 and the squirt gun costs 拢5.50. Let鈥檚 start with the puppy.
拢10 take away 拢3 will leave you with 拢7. Take away 50p and you鈥檒l get 拢6.50.
Now for the squirt gun.
Take away 拢5 from 拢6.50 and you鈥檒l have 拢1.50 left over. Take away 50p and there鈥檒l be 拢1 change.
拢3.50 for the puppy, plus 拢5.50 for the squirt gun makes 拢9 altogether.
So you can buy both toys with your 拢10 note.
拢10 is 拢1 more than they cost together, so you鈥檒l get 拢1 in change.

Pounds and pence
Money comes in pounds and pence. One pound is the same as 100 pence.
Pounds are written with a 拢 before the number:
- for example two pounds is written as 拢2.
Pence are written with a p after the number:
- for example twenty pence is written as 20p
Sometimes pounds and pence are written together as 拢 then the number of pounds then a dot then the number of pence.
- for example one pound and fifty pence is written as 拢1.50
How do you add and subtract money?
If you are just working with pounds, or just working with pence, you can add and subtract just like with ordinary numbers.
If you are working with pounds and pence, remember that 100辫=拢1
Bridging through 100 can help. Here's what to do:
work out what you need to add to your first number of pence to make 100
add 1 to the pounds for the 100 pence
subtract what you added from the second number
the number you have left says how many pence you have
add this to the number of pounds you have for the final answer
Example
What is 70p + 40p?
What do you need to add to 70p to make 100p?
70p + 30p = 100p
This makes 拢1.
Take 30p away from 40p
40p - 30p = 10p
Add this to the pounds to make 拢1.10辫
