How likely is it you'll share a birthday with someone?

Description

A reporter makes a bet with a passer-by about how many people they鈥檇 have to ask before they found two with a matching birthday. It turns out that you only need to ask 35 people for it to be very likely that you鈥檒l get a match, and the clip explains why.

Classroom Ideas

Could be used as an enrichment activity on probability. Students could try to express the probability as a fraction or a percentage before conducting the birthday survey round the class or school. It could be used as an introduction to more advanced level work on permutations and combinations.
