Buying ingredients for sausages

Description

The contestants are tasked with going to Smithfield meat market to buy the ingredients for sausages. The two teams enter negotiations with tough sellers, and have to try to beat down prices on various meats. The decision on whether to have a higher proportion of meat in the sausages, which will in turn increase the retail price, is a key one. Two contestants go through the price per pack that they are going to have to charge to meet costs, and the two teams make different amounts of profits.

Classroom Ideas

Use as a starter clip for a topic on ratio and proportion or everyday financial mathematics. Students could complete an exercise in producing and selling goods, weighing up costs versus profits.
