The effect of weather on rocks

Description

Rocks on the surface of the Earth can be worn away by the weather into interesting shapes. Rocks can be soft or hard. Soft rock is more likely to be worn away by the weather over long periods of time. Some rock shapes are formed over millions of years.

Classroom Ideas

Looking through various research materials online and in the library, students could each select an unusual or interesting image of rock formation, and write down key facts about its formation. For example, how long the rock took to form, the factors which impacted on it, whether the rock is soft or hard and so on. The images could be placed face down in a pile and shuffled. Students could each pick an image at random and try to guess which country the rock formation originates from, based on the kinds of weather which might have had an impact on the way the rock is shaped and textured. Students could take it in turns guessing, and the pictures could be returned to their owners and the answers read out.
