  • Metals and their extraction

    • The reactivity series of metals

The method used to extract metals depends on the reactivity of the metal. The reactivity series allows us to predict how metals will react.

    • Redox, extraction of iron and transition metals

Redox reactions are involved in the extraction of metals from their ores, eg extracting iron by reduction within the blast furnace. Transition metals have high melting points and densities, form coloured compounds and act as catalysts.

    • Electrolysis and extraction of aluminium

Electrolysis involves using electricity to break down electrolytes to form elements. The products of electrolysis can be predicted for a given electrolyte. Aluminium is one metal which is extracted from its ore by this method.

    • Electrolysis extended content [GCSE Chemistry only]

Electrolysis involves using electricity to break down electrolytes to form elements. The products of electrolysis can be predicted for a given electrolyte. Electrolysis is used in electroplating and purifying metals.
