The Cold War
The start of the Cold War 1945-55
After World War Two, it was hoped that the wartime allies could continue to work together. However, relations between the US and Soviet Union deteriorated quickly.
The Berlin Wall
After World War Two, Germany was split into four zones. The Soviet Union, UK, America and France would each control a zone, with Berlin also divided into four.
The Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis was probably the closest the world came to nuclear war during the Cold War. The decisions taken by either side could have led to disaster.
The end of the Cold War
By the beginning of the 1980s, the Soviet Union faced several challenges. The taking down of the Berlin Wall in 1989 kick-started the fall of the Soviet Union.
