Set and costume design

Description

Set and costume designer Bob Crawley describes his route into this job and explains what first caught his interest in terms of design and talks about the skills and qualities required in the job. He cites curiosity as perhaps more important than technical skills, as a stage designer needs a keen interest in researching all kinds of contexts and historical eras. There are glimpses of the set of 鈥楢lice鈥檚 Adventures In Wonderland鈥 in construction, including the Cheshire Cat, a three dimensional version of the original illustration.

Classroom Ideas

Look at a section from 鈥楢lice鈥檚 Adventures in Wonderland鈥. Ask students to undertake some research into the presentation, including the choreography, of previous stage shows. Ask students to come up with their own design board for either the set for that scene or for a costume in that scene. They could include drawings, diagrams, magazine clippings, print outs, bits of material. It should all be labelled. Ask students to prepare a presentation of their ideas, as if for a producer and director.
