Key points
A formulaA fact, rule, or principle that is expressed in words or in mathematical symbols. Plural: formulae. is a rule that links variableAn unknown value, usually represented by a letter like 饾挋 or 饾挌 and is used to work something out.
By manipulating the algebra, a different variable is isolateSet apart, alone. The variable is by itself on one side of the mathematical statement. to become the subject (of a formula)The formula for the area of a circle is A = 蟺r虏 The area A is the subject of the formula. The subject can be changed if the formula is rearranged.. This is called rearrange (a formula)Change the subject of a formula. The formula for the area of a circle (A = 蟺r虏) can be rearranged to change the subject, in this case to make the subject the radius r =鈭(A/蟺) to change the subject.
By conventionThe usual or expected way. , the subject of a formula is written first, before the equals sign, although it is still correct written on either side.
Manipulating the formula uses skills of understanding algebraic notation and inverse operationThe opposite of a mathematical process. Eg, the inverse of 脳 5 is 梅 5. The inverse operation undoes the original process., as well as function machines. The same skills used here can be used when solving equations.
Rearrange a formula using inverse operations
inverse operationThe opposite of a mathematical process. Eg, the inverse of 脳 5 is 梅 5. The inverse operation undoes the original process. are used to undo each process step in a formulaA fact, rule, or principle that is expressed in words or in mathematical symbols. Plural: formulae. to change the subject.
To change the subject of a formula:
Write the formula and identify the variableAn unknown value, usually represented by a letter like 饾挋 or 饾挌 that is to be the new subject.
Start with the new subject and write out the function machine for the formula, showing each operation step by step.
Undo each step by using the inverse operation:
- Start with the last operation and work back to the first.
- For each step make sure that the inverse is applied to both sides of the formula.
When the new subject is isolated, the rearranging process is complete.
Write the new subject equal to the rearrange (a formula)Change the subject of a formula. The formula for the area of a circle (A = 蟺r虏) can be rearranged to change the subject, in this case to make the subject the radius r =鈭(A/蟺) .

Question
Rearrange the formula for the area of a circle to make the radius the subject.
The function machine is a 2-step process, square and then multiply by 蟺. To rearrange the formula these steps are undone using the inverse operations.
- The inverse of multiply by 蟺 is divide by 蟺. The inverse of squaring is square root.
- Divide both sides of the formula by 蟺. The formula is now 饾懆/蟺 = 饾挀2
- Square root both sides of the formula. The formula is now 鈭(饾懆/蟺) = 饾挀.
- This isolates the radius, 饾挀. The rearranging process is complete.
With the radius as the subject, the formula is 饾挀 = 鈭(饾懆/蟺).
