Apprenticeships

Description

A young woman talks about her apprenticeship at a car manufacturing factory in Germany. She explains at what age she started there and what her apprenticeship involves. She mentions the things she found difficult at first, what she did to overcome this and says what she thinks about it. Apprentices are known as 鈥楢zubis鈥 in German. Apprenticeships are a popular way of training young people in Germany.

Classroom Ideas

Explain what is meant by 鈥楢zubi鈥 and its importance within the German system of education and training. Ask students to watch the clip and to create their own questions in English to ask the rest of the class. Pick out key vocabulary, then ask carefully-guided questions in German which encourage the use of this vocabulary in the answers. This could lead to a piece of written work about the working life of an 鈥楢zubi鈥.
