Why did the Romans come to Caledonia?
Description
The Romans came to Scotland to conquer new land, in search of natural resources such as silver and gold. They also needed a constant supply of slaves and there is evidence that slaves were used by the Romans in Scotland.
Classroom Ideas
Students could consider how the Romans would have reached Caledonia. What would they have had to bring and how long would it have taken to reach? Students could be asked to give reasons why a group of people may want to invade another place. Why would the Romans want to invade Caledonia? Other than Roman glory, students could compile a list of things that the Romans stood to gain in Caledonia.
