Why did the Romans build walls?
Description
Hadrian鈥檚 Wall and the Antonine Wall are more than just walls. They are defensive structures with a series of forts along them, built when it was thought that the Roman invasion of Caledonia was costing too much. The walls contained stones with Latin inscriptions telling us who built them.
Classroom Ideas
Students could further explore Roman walls and specific archaeological sites along them. They could look at the physical features that influenced where the walls were built.
Hadrian鈥檚 Wall and the Antonine Wall could be located or plotted onto a map, and students could consider reasons for building the walls. Students could investigate what is left of the walls now, and how they may have looked in the past. The stones bearing inscriptions could be used to discuss the language of the Romans (Latin) and Roman numerals.
