Beliefs, teachings & practices - Unit 2
Authority
Most people have sources of authority they can go to for guidance and help. Sikhs’ sacred text, Guru Granth Sahib, sometimes known as the Adi Granth, is their most important source of authority.
Equality
Prejudice and discrimination are attitudes and resulting actions that cause people to be treated differently. Sikhism teaches that people of every community should be treated equally.
Rites of passage
Religious people often have ceremonies to mark significant points in life. A Sikh’s life may be centred round the gurdwara and support from the community throughout the various Sikh rites of passage.
Festivals
Festivals commemorate significant moments in every religion’s calendar. Sikh festivals can involve processions, dancing, lights and fireworks.
