The sinking of the Titanic - breaking news report
Description
In this mock news report, reporter Mark Simpson breaks the news of the sinking of the Titanic in the North Atlantic. An insert describes the ship, her route and passenger numbers. A correspondent in America gives a more detailed description, with information about the collision with an iceberg and the emergency operation. Information is given about some of the passengers and crew, and we see footage of relatives arriving at the White Star Line offices in the hope of more news.
Classroom Ideas
Students could write a script for a similar news report about an event of their choice. Students could work in three groups, with one group writing the headlines and breaking news script for the news reader, another group writing the script for an interview in the studio, and the third group writing script(s) for correspondent(s) in the field. Students could perform their scripts, and if recording equipment is available, create their own mock radio or television item.
