Playground buddies, massages and mediators
Description
An introduction to three types of bullying prevention strategies. This report introduces us to playground buddies whose job it is to make sure all children are involved in playtime and to try to solve any problems students may have. It also shows how massage in the classroom, accompanied by soft music and pictures, can relieve tension in the children when they go out onto the playground. Finally, we are introduced to mediators, children who volunteer for the task of being the sounding board for any problems children may have. Children often prefer this to confiding in a teacher.
Classroom Ideas
Students could explore some imaginary scenarios, for example, 鈥楽am鈥檚 best friend is unwell and not at school today鈥. They could then discuss how a mini-bud might help in this situation. Ask students to consider the special qualities and skills needed to do a good job as a mini-bud. Students could draw a picture of a mini-buddy and label it with all of these special qualities.
A buddy stop could be created in the playground, and for one week students could take it in turns to be mini-buddies for their classmates. At the end of the week, students could reflect on how successful they have been as mini-buddies, and whether they would like to keep this going in their playground.
Students could also talk about when and why they might need to relax at school. They could also discuss ways in which they could do this. Challenge students to organise a relaxation afternoon and take some time one day to explore their ideas on relaxation techniques. Students could then discuss how these made them feel and what they think the impact might be on their classroom work and behaviour.
