An introduction to China and Mandarin, the official Chinese language. Mandarin is taught in schools using pinyin, a romanised, phonetic system of writing Chinese. There鈥檚 a brief introduction to how Chinese characters are formed and how calligraphy is still practised as an art. The clip covers greeting people and saying your name.

Classroom Ideas

After showing students the clip, practise the basic Chinese greetings. Write down both pinyin and characters of Nihao, Zaijian, Xiexie on the white board as a reminder for the students or use pre-prepared flash cards before putting the students in pairs to act out a greeting scenario.
