Mark O鈥橩eefe, principal trumpet with the 大象传媒 Scottish Symphony Orchestra talks about his interests in playing a diverse range of music outside his work with the orchestra. He describes the importance of working in new areas, experimenting with music and what these experiences bring to his 鈥榙ay job鈥 with the 大象传媒 SSO. He also talks about his role as a teacher and the satisfaction that gives him. This clip features a solo performance of the traditional Irish piece, 鈥楳y Lagan Love鈥.
Classroom Ideas
Students could use this clip as a springboard for a class discussion on how to constructively critique on their own work and that of others, including both amateurs and professionals. The class can also learn to identify the sound of brass music from its features. They could also experiment with playing or listening to trumpets and identify the unique features of the instrument, and what sort of music it would and would not suit, and why.
