Picts and the Christian churches

Description

The Picts had to decide which Christian church to follow, the Columban or Northumbrian. There were differences between the two, for example, the way in which monks shaved their hair, the designs of churches and crosses, and how each religion was practised. The Picts chose to follow the Northumbrian church, which led to tension and fighting with the Scotti. The Picts ended up taking control of some of the Scotti kingdom.

Classroom Ideas

Students could draw a Columban and a Northumbrian monk with their crosses, in order to reveal their differences. Beside each drawing, students could list similarities and differences between the two churches.
