Description
Actor Adrian Lester works with a group of students by demonstrating the importance of diction and pronunciation. He encourages them to repeat a series of words and phrases at varying speeds.
Classroom Ideas
Before watching the clip, display the following line, 鈥淎re you thinking of going to the party?鈥 Ask students, in pairs to come up with several different ways of saying this. Record these and play them back to students. They should appraise them, noting which are clear and where the sounds that make up the words are correctly pronounced. Discuss diction and its importance in theatre and how we balance this when creating something that requires accents or dialect. Watch the clip, and then discuss why good diction and pronunciation is vital in performance.
