Reflected and refracted waves
Description
Sara and Beca are at home using the computer when they come into difficulties trying to ‘surf the web’. Ada misinterprets the girls’ discussion and starts to explain waves through Sara’s tablet computer. Ada discusses key concepts surrounding the behaviour of waves as it interacts with other mediums, such as reflection and refraction. Ada also discusses how the speed and direction of waves change as they interact with different mediums of varying density.
Classroom Ideas
Drop one side of a box filled with different depths of water and measure how long it takes for the wave to reach the other end of the box. Use a light box and different shape blocks to show how light is refracted when traveling through different mediums. Describe how waves are formed on the beach after watching the animation. Practice drawing reflected and refracted waves at different angles after watching the animation. Choose different mediums and describe how a wave would react after travelling from one to another after watching the animation.; Firstly, pupils must describe the density of each medium.
