Mountain Rescue in the Torridon mountains

Description

Tour guide Tess climbs a mountain in the Torridon range. She is unprepared and gets into difficulties. A mountain rescue helicopter is called out to look for her. Tess calls the emergency number 112 and learns how to find a grid reference on a map to reveal exactly where she is.

Classroom Ideas

Students could be set the challenge of becoming mountain rescuers themselves. Working in groups, each table in the class could be laid out with a large scale version of a map and the script for a number of emergency phone calls.

Alternatively, they could be given recordings of these calls. Groups could then listen to or read each emergency call and decide what route would be best for them to take in order to reach all the people in distress and where to land their helicopter each time, using the contour lines as a guide. Emergency calls could include some with the grid references provided and others which include only a description of the terrain and landmarks.

This clip could also be used to introduce hill-climbing safety procedures to students. Following discussion, students could design their own safety posters for hill walkers.
