Root and shoot growth

Description

An introduction to seed germination and growth. The presenter explains how a seed takes in water and swells when it is planted. With the help of time-lapse photography, we see how a seed grows. First we see the roots growing down to find water, anchoring the plant. Then we see how the shoots grow upwards to find light. More time-lapse photography is used to show plants growing and flowering.

Classroom Ideas

This clip can be used as an introduction to plant growth. The children could fill jam jars with cotton wool and grow bean plants. A camera could be set up to take pictures 3 or 5 times a day. When the photos are all put together, the children would have a short film of their bean growth. They could write a short commentary to accompany it.
