Microorganisms (clip compilation)
Description
This is a compilation of clips set to a background of music and based on the theme of microorganisms. Includes images of sneezing, yogurt, blue cheese, magnified skin, microbes, rotting vegetation, teeth, and scrubbing up prior to surgery. Note: There is no narration in this clip.
Classroom Ideas
Children could watch this as a visual reinforcement after having learned about terms such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, beneficial microbes, harmful microbes. You could stop the clip at each scene showing microorganisms at work and invite the pupils to link the scene to one of the terms. For example, sneezing - spreading viruses, rotting vegetation - broken down by microbes, Stilton cheese - fungus making blue lines. The clip could also be used when looking at health issues. Help the children to make a list of diseases caused by bacteria (harmful microbes) and talk how they can be prevented by a vaccine (beneficial microbes).
