Adaptations of animals living in the Arctic

Description

A report on how polar bears, snow foxes and reindeer have adapted to live in extreme cold. The narrator explains their key adaptations and we see them in their Arctic environment.

Classroom Ideas

Useful as part of a study about the topic of variation. After watching the clip, split the students into three groups and allocate each group one of the animals featured - polar bear, snow fox and reindeer.

Watch the clip again and ask each group to focus on their allocated animal and write down the facts about adaptation which are presented. Students could go on to conduct further independent research into the physical and behavioural characteristics of one of these animals, or another Artic animal of their choice. How have these characteristics evolved to help ensure the survival of the animal? The research could then be collated in the form of a class poster or to start a wildlife fact file under the topic of 鈥楢rctic animals鈥.
