Christian views on euthanasia or assisted dying
Description
We hear from two Christians with opposing views on euthanasia. Both views are backed up by interpretations of Biblical references and situations. Issues raised include Christian views on suffering, interpreting the Bible and arguments for and against legalising euthanasia.
Classroom Ideas
Ask the class to weigh up the points made by both people in the clip and decide who they are more convinced by and why. They can describe the difference between active and passive euthanasia identified in the clip. An interesting brainstorm could be held on what the implications of legalising euthanasia in the UK would be. This discussion could touch on similarities and distictions between religious and moral guidance, and legal guidance. The class may also find their attitudes are different when comparing specific cases with general rules and guidelines. Students could conduct further research on the opinions of euthanasia held by other major religions. They could also study a Bible to see why different interpretations on the morality of euthanasia can be made from its stories.
