High drama with Gazebo youth theatre

Youth theatre with important social message

Fresh from their tour of Wolverhampton schools tackling the issues of bullying and domestic violence, youth theatre group Gazebo take us through their projects for summer 2007.

Gazebo mixes entertaining theatre with important messages for the youth of the West Midlands, to encourage them to make the correct decisions. This summer the message focuses on safety.

'Safe Night Out'

This multi-agency programme sees Gazebo team up with the Young Women's Christian Association, Community Safety Partnership and West Midlands Police to perform at Oceana night club for young people aged 14-15.

It uses real life dramas about carrying weapons, spiking drinks and taking drugs to develop a social message for the audience alongside older mentors.

'Safe and sound as a pound'

An interactive multi-sensory performance embarking on a school tour from the 3rd to the 20th July 2007.

The project is about developing a healthy, safer lifestyle; with particular focus on keeping safe both at home and outside during an uncertain time in life. It will encompass healthy eating, friendship and the effects of puberty.

Schools can also book to be part of a life skills workshop taking place on the 11th and 29th June 2007.

Gazebo's "Zap" anti-blame techniques
Gazebo don't point the finger

All this follows from the highly successful tour of a show designed to tackle the many aspects of bullying in society, 'What goes around comes around'.

The play followed the story of Tom, a boy who is on the verge of being excluded from school for good if he doesn't stop his anti-social and bullying behaviour.

As the show progressed it becomes clear that Tom and his mother were suffering from domestic violence at the hands of the father.

"It's about breaking cycles"

We all follow social patterns we are familiar with. The play highlighted that a cycle of violence began with Tom's grandfather hitting his grandmother; who in turn hit her daughter.

The daughter herself thought domestic violence natural and married an abusive husband. This all contributed to creating a culture of violence in Tom's home.

Getting kids to be pro-active

The message being that children often bully others at school because they are victims of bullying at home.

Commissioned by Health Schools Wolverhampton, the play was developed to demonstrate ways of copying with domestic violence crimes and bullying in schools.

It covered the principles of "Restorative Justice" and "Zap Assertiveness Training" techniques; which are aimed at young people aged 9–15 who have been bullied and want to learn effective ways to be assertive.
