Tom reviews. Wolverhampton saw a real gathering of the tribes on Thursday as Nine Inch Nails were in town as part of a short tour of the UK. Following on from their appearance at the Carling festival at Leeds and Reading, Trent Reznor’s highly influential industrial pioneers delivered a full on sonic attack to a crowded and extremely hot Civic Hall. ![]() Nine Inch Nails A crowd made up of all ages began to gather outside the venue well before midday, which is a testament to NINs cult popularity. Appealing to both enthusiasts of electronica and noise metal alike, the band certainly didn’t disappoint when they eventually appeared on stage to a tumultuous reception. The last ‘real’ gigFrontman Reznor clearly enjoyed the occasion, even commenting that it is the last ‘real’ gig before NIN embark on a series of festivals in Europe, a prospect that he was clearly not relishing. Playing a mixture of material from their latest album Year Zero and early work from Pretty Hate Machine and The Downward Spiral, the band combined ear-splitting levels of volume with an innovative stage set up. The track ‘The Great Destroyer’ saw the introduction of a giant video screen that transformed the group into a digital silhouette whilst the relentless bass sounds shook the entire hall. The group ended the show with ‘Head Like a Hole’ then reappeared to deliver the final track of the night, ‘Hurt’, leaving a very hot and satisfied crowd to recover outside.
