Title: Mexican inspired coktail dress
Image by Anna from Northamptonshire | in fashion, design & create, drawings/design
I looked at traditional men's and women's costume. I was inspired by Frida Kahlo's style and the paintings of Mexican landscapes of Xavier Castellanos. I fell in love with his use of colour, which reminds me of Matisse - those beautiful clashing purples, yellows, reds, blues, pinks, greens - so contrasting yet all equal. Similarly to the still clearly visible division of classes in Mexico where the working and the upper classes have only a small amount of interaction. I have designed a dress which is both masculine and feminine, shows a historical heritage and a clash of colours and fabrics playfully finished off with a mini straw mexican hat. The detachable collar and neck tie is glamourised by a splash of hotfix Swarovski crystals, the bodice, made from cotton, has a false button front and beaded traditional motifs on the sides. The waistband is made from velvet with edges embroidered in gold thread. The skirt is made from chiffon and cotton, hemmed by delicate lace with satin ribbons threaded through. The result - Mexican inspired look for the independent, successful, stylish girl of tomorrow.
